When Extraordinary Escapes began curating Maldives luxury holidays over 23 years ago, there were only a handful of internationally recognised luxury resorts in the Maldives. Today, there are so many resorts to choose from, all offering very different experiences, levels of privacy, service and value, that many clients find themselves overwhelmed by the sheer amount of information available online.
While many resorts position themselves as luxury or five star properties, the reality is that there can be substantial differences between resorts in terms of villa quality, island space, privacy, service standards and culinary experiences. Over two decades of first hand resort inspections and client feedback, Extraordinary Escapes has developed its own internal luxury classification framework to help clients better understand the differences between Maldives luxury resorts and why pricing between resorts can vary so significantly.
The Extraordinary Escapes Luxury Classification Framework
At Extraordinary Escapes, we have devised a classification system to help clients understand the differences between the luxury resorts. Our classification framework is not based on marketing language or official tourism ratings alone. It is based on first hand resort experience, operational consistency, guest experience standards and long term client feedback.
Extraordinary Escapes classifies the resorts within our collection into two broad luxury categories, Five Star Luxury Resorts and Six Star Luxury Resorts. We use three factors to help us classify the resorts. Firstly, the room itself, secondly, we use a villa to island density ratio and finally, the service and the quality of the food. To be included within our collection, a resort must consistently deliver the level of experience associated with its classification.
The Three Factors We Use to Classify Maldives Luxury Resorts
1. Villa Quality, Space and Design
To be included within our collection, a resort must genuinely deliver the level of luxury expected of a premium Maldives experience. Five star resorts within the Extraordinary Escapes collection offer stunning luxury accommodation, beautifully designed villas and exceptional comfort throughout. Six star resorts, however, offer an even greater level of villa space, design refinement and exclusivity. These resorts will typically feature exceptionally large villas, highly considered architectural detail, expansive indoor and outdoor living areas and elevated privacy features such as private pools across all villa categories.
While both classifications represent outstanding Maldives luxury accommodation, six star resorts deliver an even more spacious and refined villa experience with a stronger emphasis on scale, privacy and residential style luxury.
2. Villa to Island Density Ratio
One of the most important yet least understood factors in Maldives luxury is island density. At Extraordinary Escapes, we assess the relationship between the number of villas on an island and the overall island size. Lower density resorts provide greater villa privacy, quieter beaches, more spacious communal areas and a more exclusive atmosphere overall. The fewer villas there are relative to the size of the island, the greater the sense of space and seclusion guests are likely to experience.
This is often particularly noticeable with overwater villas, where increased villa density can naturally reduce privacy and result in a busier overall island environment with a larger number of guests sharing the resort experience. Two resorts may appear similar online, however the guest experience can feel entirely different depending on how many villas share the island environment.
3. Service Standards and Culinary Experience
Service standards and culinary experiences are often among the most noticeable differences between five star and six star Maldives resorts. These operational differences are often among the hidden factors that contribute to pricing differences between Maldives luxury resorts. At Extraordinary Escapes, we spend considerable time inspecting and understanding the operational mechanics behind each resort experience so our clients can better understand not only the differences between resorts, but also the value behind the pricing presented.
At many six star resorts, guests are assigned a dedicated butler or personal host who may look after only one to three villas. This allows for an exceptionally personalised level of service, with a very high degree of attention and flexibility. At a five star resort, guests may also enjoy the services of a dedicated butler or host, however the same host may be responsible for a larger number of villas. While still delivering an exceptional luxury experience, the level of personalisation and immediacy will naturally differ.
Culinary experiences also tend to differ between the classifications and at Extraordinary Escapes we look at breakfasts as an example. At many six star resorts, breakfast is often presented as a refined à la carte experience, complemented by a curated buffet selection. Guests are able to sit down and enjoy individually prepared dishes made to order in a more personalised dining environment. At five star resorts, breakfast offerings are still extremely impressive, featuring expansive buffets, live cooking stations and chefs preparing dishes to order. However, the overall dining style offers a different luxury experience.
Why Pricing Between Maldives Resorts Can Vary So Significantly
Many guests initially compare Maldives resorts based on photography alone, however the most significant differences are often the least visible online. Privacy, staffing ratios, island density, villa scale, culinary quality and personalised service all contribute substantially to operating costs and ultimately to resort pricing.

Our goal is not simply to offer the largest number of resorts, but to recommend resorts we genuinely believe in and confidently stand behind.
