Maldives Expertise

The Authority on the Maldives By Jodie Turner, CEO at Extraordinary Escapes

There are few places in the world that evoke the same sense of awe, serenity, and escapism as the Maldives. Powder-white sands, endless turquoise lagoons, and some of the most exquisite luxury resorts in the world, this is a destination that doesn’t just meet expectations, it redefines them. Yet, as travel continues to evolve in an increasingly complex world, how you book your Maldives experience has become just as important as where you stay.

Confidence Through Expertise

In today’s travel landscape, flexibility and reassurance have become essential. While cancellation policies and terms are always important considerations, what truly makes a difference is having someone in your corner who can advocate for you when circumstances change. This is where booking with a destination expert becomes invaluable.

With 23 years of experience specializing exclusively in the Maldives and having personally spent 341 days staying at its extraordinary collection of luxury resorts, I have dedicated my career to understanding this destination on a level few others have. I have become known within the industry as a leading authority on the Maldives, trusted not only for my knowledge, but for my relationships, insight, and ability to deliver exceptional experiences for our clients every time.

At Extraordinary Escapes, we have spent decades cultivating strong, long-standing relationships with the Maldives’ most prestigious resorts. These relationships are built on trust, consistency, and mutual respect. They allow us to go far beyond what is typically possible through standard booking channels. When plans need to change, often at short notice and sometimes within strict cancellation periods, our direct connections enable us to negotiate, rearrange, and find solutions that simply wouldn’t be accessible otherwise.

This level of support transforms the travel experience. It removes uncertainty and replaces it with confidence, knowing that every aspect of your holiday is being managed by someone who understands both the destination and the intricacies of your booking.

Why the Maldives Remains an Ideal Destination

Beyond the reassurance of expert guidance, the Maldives itself stands out as one of the most naturally secure and serene destinations in the world. From the moment you arrive, the experience is unlike anywhere else. The international airport is located on its own island, separate from the capital, which immediately creates a sense of calm and order. From there, guests transfer directly to their chosen resort, each one occupying its own private island.

This unique geography is what makes the Maldives so special. Every resort is entirely self-contained, with access limited exclusively to guests and staff. There are no crowds, no traffic, no outside interruptions, just uninterrupted space, privacy, and tranquility. It is a place where you can truly disconnect from the world and immerse yourself in a peaceful, natural environment.

In addition, the journey to the Maldives is both straightforward and reliable. Transiting through Singapore is widely regarded as one of the safest and most efficient travel routes globally. Singapore Changi Airport is consistently recognised for its exceptional organisation, cleanliness, and ease of transfer, making it an ideal gateway for international travellers.

The Importance of Travel Insurance

As a final layer of protection, comprehensive travel insurance remains essential. While expert planning and flexible arrangements provide significant reassurance, insurance offers additional peace of mind should the unexpected occur. From medical coverage to trip interruptions, it ensures that you are protected throughout your journey.

It is important to review policies carefully to understand what is and is not covered, particularly in relation to global events. Not all policies are identical, and choosing the right level of coverage is key.

Advocates for Our Clients

In a world where travel can sometimes feel uncertain, the value of expertise, relationships, and personalized service cannot be overstated. The Maldives remains one of the most extraordinary destinations on Earth but to experience it at its very best, it is essential to have the right guidance. At Extraordinary Escapes, we pride ourselves on being more than just a travel company. We are specialists, advisors, and advocates for our clients. Our knowledge is not theoretical; it is built on years of firsthand experience and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

Ultimately, the difference lies in the details. The right recommendation, the right relationship, the right solution at the right time.

These are the elements that transform a holiday into something truly unforgettable. In a destination as exceptional as the Maldives, that difference means everything.

What Makes the Maldives the Most Magical Island Destination in the World

Everyone knows the Maldives for its picture-perfect images, iridescent turquoise lagoons, and powder-soft white sand, but what makes the Maldives the most magical Island destination in the world is the combination of all its unique attributes. It is this unrivaled combination that makes the Maldives literally an Extraordinary Escape!

Unmatched Natural Beauty & Marine Life

The Maldives 1,190 islands are scattered across the Indian Ocean in extraordinary Atoll formations, creating breathtaking ring-shaped patterns of turquoises and aquas. Even the seaplane transfer to your resort is a remarkable experience unique to the Maldives. The Maldives islands are aesthetically nothing short of stunning and after 23 years of visiting the Maldives and 341 days spent there, I am still completely in awe with every visit. The Maldives is equatorial in climate, rather than tropical, providing warm weather and water year-round, making it a perfect destination in any season.

The Maldives is home to one of the most spectacular marine environments on the planet. Its vibrant coral reefs are abundant in marine life, with many islands offering house reefs just metres from the beach — meaning you can snorkel alongside colourful fish, turtles, and reef sharks without ever leaving your island. Imagine diving off your overwater villa and going for a snorkel maybe even before breakfast! My favourite way to start the day. Beyond the reefs, the Maldives provides access to some of the world’s most sought-after megafauna, including graceful manta rays and the gentle giant of the ocean, the whale shark. These encounters, both accessible and awe-inspiring, make the Maldives a truly unparalleled destination for marine lovers.

A True Sense of Privacy and Island Escape

At the luxury level, every resort occupies its own individual island, ensuring complete privacy and a genuine feeling of escape. While on your own private island, a defining feature of the Maldives is the absence of any vehicles, crowds and noise. With the most typical mode of transportation being a bicycle, the resort islands move at a relaxed, unhurried pace. Guests can enjoy quiet beaches, walk barefoot if desired, and settle into a rhythm of calm that feels far removed from everyday life.

The Maldives takes privacy to an entirely new level, with some luxury resorts offering entirely private islands that guests can book exclusively for themselves, a group of friends or extended family. These secluded islands are completely separate from the main resort and come with their own dedicated team, including private chefs, butlers, water sports staff, and even your own private spa. Guests enjoy the ultimate in exclusive island living, where every detail is personalised, every moment is uninterrupted, and the experience of total seclusion is paired with the highest standard of luxury. It is privacy, redefined.

World-Class Overwater Living

The Maldives remains the global leader in overwater villa design, offering an extraordinary range of styles to suit all tastes. Some villas are strikingly modern designed by award winning architects, with sleek lines, infinity pools, and contemporary features created by leading international designers. Others embrace the essence of Robinson Crusoe rustic luxury — crafted from natural materials, barefoot in spirit, yet still undeniably sophisticated. Many resorts offer villas inspired by traditional Maldivian island design, blending cultural elements with luxury.

This diversity means you can enjoy completely different experiences from one stay to the next, and many of our clients choose different resorts on different occasions to explore each style. Regardless of the design, these overwater villas offer an immersive connection to the ocean, where the stunning turquoise lagoon becomes part of daily life. If these overwater villas are not unique enough, some you can literally snorkel directly off your villa and see extraordinary coral and marine life!

Warm Maldivian Hospitality

The Maldives is defined not only by its natural beauty but by its incredible Maldivian people. Warm, illuminating, and exceptionally hospitable, they create an immediate sense of ease from the moment you arrive. The Maldives has a rich culture shaped by African, Indian, Sri Lankan, and Southeast Asian influences — reflected in its sumptuous cuisine, colourful dance traditions, and rhythmic music, particularly the hand-beaten Bodu Beru drums. Maldivians are deeply proud of this heritage, a pride that shines through when they perform Bodu Beru for guests and when they share their traditional dishes.

Maldivians are very family orientated, with most Maldivians remaining with their family on the local island where they were born until it is necessary to move away for further education or work. It is the Maldivians love for their family and pride in their culture, that elevates their service to a level I have not yet experienced anywhere else in the world.

Over the past 23 years, it has been remarkable to witness the progress of Maldivians throughout the tourism industry, with most seaplanes now flown by Maldivian pilots — both male and female — and Maldivians occupying senior management roles across the resorts. It is remarkable to witness this progress, and it adds an even deeper sense of pride and authenticity to the guest experience. This level of hospitality shapes the entire stay and is one of the key reasons guests return repeatedly to the same resorts.

Ocean-Inspired Wellness

The Maldives has become one of the world’s leading destinations for wellness-focused travel, with each luxury resort offering its own unique interpretation of wellbeing. Some resorts feature overwater spa pavilions where treatments take place above the lagoon, alongside Ayurvedic treatment rooms set on land. Others embrace nature-based wellness, with spas hidden within the canopy of palm trees or treatment rooms crafted from intertwined branches and shaped like nests set along the shoreline. Many resorts offer dedicated wellness programmes guided by visiting specialists who create personalised therapies tailored to each guest. Some even extend their approach to cuisine, offering wellness-focused menus to complement any desired treatment. In the Maldives, wellness and the ocean flow together seamlessly, creating a restorative experience unlike anywhere else in the world.

The Perfect Holiday Destination for Families and Groups

The Maldives is the ideal holiday destination for multi-generational families and groups of friends located around the world. Situated on the equator, it is literally in the middle of the world and equally accessible for everyone. This unbeatable location, combined with luxury resorts located on private islands, means children and teenagers can safely enjoy the island independently, parents can relax and enjoy downtime knowing they are safe and grandparents can relish in family time and ultimate pampering.

Extraordinary Escapes curates private itineraries for these family and friend group events, including snorkelling excursions, sandbank events, private island barbecues, dolphin cruises, sunset sailing trips, spa treatments, private cinemas on the beach, and bespoke dining experiences. Every detail is designed to create the ultimate family and friends’ holiday in the most magical Island destination in the World.

Soneva Fushi Maldives: Sustaining “Sustainability”

From the beginning Soneva Fushi had sustainability embedded in its culture. When we first visited over 18 years ago, they were pioneering a reverence for the earth and its protection through all aspects of the resort. At that time this was unique and set themselves apart from other luxury resorts and raised the eyebrows of many in the Maldives and beyond.

Soneva Fushi’s commitment to environmental protection has only continued to grow and on our most recent visit in June 2021, we couldn’t wait to see all of their hard work. Soneva’s mantra that luxury and sustainability can be interconnected has well and truly been taken to new levels.

Every area of the resort shines with sustainability. Our visit to what the island fondly calls “Waste World” bears witness to the proud fact that almost 90% of the waste is recycled. Here the waste is organized, sorted and processed for a new purpose. On the island glass is crushed, heated and reused throughout the resort as décor, windows, drinking glasses and even as part of concrete mixing. As always, resort guests are asked to take any plastic waste back home with them to recycle, however, a new interactive and educational project has been launched to have plastics and aluminum turned into useful and creative keepsakes, a true closed loop approach.

The island gardens and natural landscaping provides most of the food and the newly added vegan restaurant “Shades of Green” brings a new dining dimension to the already amazing selections. Coconuts are plentiful on the island and Soneva are continually coming up with more creative ways of using the entire coconut. The husks are composted, pressed into containers for planting, spun into rope used around the island, the coconut milk and flesh for cooking and now most recently the coconut oil is used in the spa.

Construction uses sustainably sourced wood and the most recent addition of the stunning over water villas have beautiful roof tiles made completely from recycled resort plastic. Old wood and construction waste is slowly turned into charcoal for cooking and styrofoam shipping containers are crumbled and mixed into lightweight concrete building blocks.

The décor is all natural, amenities are packaged in paper and even the lights are controlled by metal knobs. It is challenging to find any plastic being used throughout the resort at all.

Soneva are proudly 100% carbon neutral. Soneva’s pioneering efforts require leadership, innovation, investment and constant education of staff and guests. This resort authentically demonstrates a commitment to “sustainability” and “social responsibility”. An example for the world to emulate.
