When we first visited the resort, we were immediately struck by its sleek architecture, sophisticated atmosphere and contemporary design. It felt different from the traditional barefoot luxury that many travellers associate with the Maldives. Guests dressed for dinner, the atmosphere was stylish and refined, and every space appeared meticulously considered.
Yet it was only after subsequent visits that we truly understood what makes this resort so remarkable.
To appreciate The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, you first need to understand the story behind its design.
Designed by the internationally acclaimed Kerry Hill Architects, the resort is built around the Maldivian concept of the beru, or circle of island life. Inspired by the movement of ocean currents, the rhythm of the sea and the circular form found throughout traditional Maldivian culture, the circle becomes the defining architectural language of the entire resort.
Once you recognise this, you begin to see it everywhere.
The circular villas.
The curved swimming pools.
The dramatic overwater spa.

Inside the villas, floor-to-ceiling glass allows the ocean to become part of the architecture. The gentle curves of the design seem to mirror the curvature of the horizon beyond, creating a feeling that the villa, ocean and sky are all connected as one continuous space.

La Locanda, the resort’s southern Italian restaurant, quickly became one of our favourite places to start the day. Breakfast can be enjoyed indoors, outdoors, or beside beautifully manicured lawns overlooking the lagoon. Every morning feels slightly different, whether you choose a shaded terrace table, an oceanfront setting or a quiet corner overlooking the water.
One of the unique aspects of The Ritz-Carlton Maldives is its layout across three interconnected islands, linked by elegant bridges that encourage exploration by bicycle. Moving between islands becomes part of the experience itself, with each area offering its own distinct atmosphere.
A dedicated Culinary Island is home to several of the resort’s signature dining venues, including La Locanda, Summer Pavilion and Iwau. Summer Pavilion in particular delivers some of the finest contemporary Cantonese cuisine in the Maldives, served within a spectacular lantern-inspired overwater setting.

The experience extends beyond the resort itself.
As part of the Fari Islands archipelago, guests also enjoy access to the vibrant Fari Marina Village and the facilities of neighbouring Patina Maldives. A short boat ride opens the door to additional dining experiences, including Arabesque, an atmospheric restaurant inspired by Bedouin design serving Middle Eastern and North Indian cuisine, and Tum Tum, the much-loved food truck offering exceptional Asian street food.
This combination creates something rare in the Maldives.
