Maldives Resort Experience at Six Senses Laamu: Our Stay

One of our Extraordinary Escapes’ traditions is to begin each day in the Maldives with an ocean swim before breakfast. At Six Senses Laamu, that means diving into the stunning turquoise lagoon at sunrise and swimming out to snorkel the incredible house reef that runs along the front of the resort, a calm, immersive start to the day in one of the Maldives’ most exceptional marine environments.

From here, we ride our bikes barefoot along the island’s naturally vegetated pathways, a beautifully untouched, Robinson Crusoe setting. Breakfast is served at Longitude, the resort’s overwater dining hub, where we are warmly greeted and invited to choose our table for the morning. An Extraordinary Escapes ritual here is dining in a different location each day, creating a new atmosphere with every visit. Our favourite spot is the overwater tables with suspended nets, where breakfast lingers into a cappuccino, relaxing above the lagoon.

Ready for some activity, we make our way to The SHELL (Sea Hub for Environmental Learning in Laamu), where we meet the resort’s marine team and head out on a guided seagrass snorkelling experience. This is, without question, one of the best locations in the Maldives for megafauna encounters, and having been lucky enough to experience this many times we know exactly what awaits us beneath the surface. An amazing spectacle with huge green turtles, eagle rays, reef sharks, massive cow tail rays and more all moving through these rich feeding grounds.

Two spotted Eagle Rays glide through the seagrass meadows side by side as they typically do.

Following this incredible snorkel, we are ready for a well-deserved lunch at Sip Sip by the main pool, where our favourite tables are set within the water itself, sunken into the pool and perfectly positioned for a relaxing lunch.

The afternoon brings one of Laamu’s true signatures, surfing one of the local breaks within the atoll. With no other resorts nearby, the experience is incredibly exclusive, often with no one else in the water. Surfing here is effortless and exhilarating, with dolphins occasionally joining the lineup and technicolour fish visible beneath the surface, an experience that feels entirely untouched.

As the day softens, we return to the resort to prepare for sunset cocktails with Marteyne van Well, the General Manager, a dear friend we have known long before Six Senses Laamu was even built. Having shared so many years in the Maldives, these moments are always special, reminiscing, sharing stories, and catching up as the Maldivian sun drops dramatically from Chill Bar.

Dinner this evening is at Leaf, reached by its iconic suspension bridge. The setting is remarkable, elevated above the island’s organic gardens, and provides the perfect, quietly spectacular ending to an extraordinary Six Senses Laamu day.
